The changing of the seasons is a source of unparalleled beauty, and fall in the Greater Ossipee Area marks the transition between endless summer days and cozy winter nights by the fireside. As the sun sets earlier, dazzling shades of red and orange overtake the landscape in every direction. New England during peak foliage is an awe-inspiring spectacle of natural beauty, and the Greater Ossipee Area puts you right in the heart of some of our state’s most captivating scenery. Photographers, outdoor enthusiasts and those afflicted with wanderlust travel northbound every year to enjoy the very essence of this magical time.
Autumn in the Greater Ossipee Area combines some of the most alluring elements of summer and winter. From September to mid-October, summertime fun is still alive and well. Boating and kayaking/canoeing on our pristine lakes can be enjoyed during this time, although the experience is a curious contrast to what can be expected during the summer months, as lake traffic begins to thin out, and a warm day on the lake soaking up the sun becomes a scenic foliage cruise. You may find it pairs perfectly with a crackling campfire, at the end of an adventurous day. The sense of peace and unspoiled serenity found on the lake this time of year is almost impossible to articulate. This is a sentiment relatable to nearly every aspect of our natural world this time of year, as activities like hiking, camping and fishing take on a whole new image. Autumn hiking in the Greater Ossipee Area presents a whole new element, as the landscape transforms into a colorful paradise. Many seasoned hikers also maintain that an autumn hike is preferable to a summer hike, due to the lower temperatures, which help ward off heat exhaustion. Be sure to check out popular trails, such as Rattlesnake Mountain, which overlooks Lake Winnipesaukee, and the Lakes Region Area.
Halloween Town, which is held in October, is a family-friendly Halloween celebration for children to explore decorated cabins, collect candy, and make memories. This event, held in East Madison, helps benefit The Laura Foundation for Autism and Epilepsy. Children and Adults can enjoy a fun, safe Halloween experience while supporting a good cause! Halloween is a tradition near and dear to children in the Greater Ossipee Area. Many local organizations offer Halloween celebrations for children. The Ossipee Town Hall and the Madison Recreation organize fun, supervised Halloween activities for children each year!
Columbus Day Weekend also marks the return of the annual Sandwich Fair. Since 1909, the Sandwich Fair has laid the foundation for countless memories, precious to people of all ages. With a wide variety of thrill rides, enticing fair food and live agricultural displays, the Sandwich Fair can best be described as the proverbial New England fair experience.
