Tamworth

Five picturesque villages - Tamworth, Whittier, South Tamworth, Chocorua, and Wonalancet - make up the town of Tamworth. Residents of all villages, with Mount Chocorua as their backdrop, have not only the natural beauty of the surrounding areas to appreciate but also a strong community. Tamworth Village has been featured as a backdrop for many postcards, calendars, and puzzles. Flowing brooks, scenic vistas, and a broad network of hiking, biking and skiing trails provide a natural playground to people of all ages visiting the Tamworth area. Rent or bring your own canoes or kayaks to explore the beautiful rivers that flow through town. The town is also host to many charitable organizations helping others in the area that have been in existence for many years. With the Tamworth Community Nurse Association, which provides free nursing service to Tamworth residents, the Tamworth Caregivers, and many other grassroots organizations, there is a strong sense of support and community here. The community is a strong supporter of the arts, with the presence of the Barnstormers Theatre in the Village as well as the Arts Council of Tamworth that hosts performances and educational opportunities for young people. Remick Country Doctor and Farm Museum hosts events that fill out the rest of the year, focusing on such seasonal activities as ice harvesting, maple sugaring, hearth cooking, and holiday dinners. Each year, the town hosts the Tamworth family day on the 4th of July, complete with a parade, music and food in the afternoon, followed by fireworks in the evening. The parade starts in the village and continues to the elementary school grounds. Visit www.tamworthnh.org.

Sandwich

The picturesque town of Sandwich is a captivating place to call home. Stay a week here, and you’ll find yourself fallen in love with the aromatic scent of pines, rolling green hills and nature at every turn. You’ll never want to leave. You’d share the sentiment with Sandwich’s population of nearly 1,600 people (per 2015 census) who choose to live here for the beautiful views, diverse community and endless opportunity. Originally incorporated in 1763, as part of a charter, the town was named in honor of John Montagu, Earl of Sandwich. Montagu is credited for inventing the sandwich. A frequent gambler, he would eat bread with meat in between two slices of bread, which came to be known as “the Earl of Sandwich’s usual meal.”

The town of Sandwich boasts the classic New England charm poets are attracted to New Hampshire to capture. Located just over the border of Tamworth, Sandwich is the south-western most town, mere minutes from Lake Winnipesaukee, and a gateway to the Lakes Region. Squam Lake is also located partially in Sandwich, giving residents and visitors access to countless hours of summertime fun on the lake. Fans of the 1981 Katharine Hepburn film On Golden Pond will recognize this lake as the setting for the film. The town itself is home to beautiful antique farmhouses, set across a rural landscape where life appears to pass at a slower pace, to ensure one time to smell the flowers. Local restaurants and taverns bring the community together for good food and a welcoming atmosphere. The town is also a set stage for outdoor adventure. Rattlesnake Mountain is a 2 mile hike, with a trailhead located in Center Sandwich. Hikers are rewarded with break taking views of Lake Winnipesaukee. “Winnipesaukee,” when translated from Native American, means “Smile of the Great Spirit.” Other area hikes include Wentworth Trail, Guinea Pond Trail, and the Sandwich Range. The range, which was designated by the United States Congress in 1984, is located on the South East corner of the White Mountains.

Sandwich is the home of the Annual Sandwich Fair, which is held yearly throughout Columbus Day weekend. This tradition, which dates back to 1909, brings spectators from all over the country. The experience is once in a lifetime; between the mouth-watering food vendors, agricultural displays and timeless thrill rides. Agricultural displays, featuring the contributions of the Carroll County 4-H chapter captivate audiences year after year. Fair time in the fall is a holiday season all in itself for the State of NH, and Sandwich brings the experience home every October.
